Reminder about the Y.E.S. Training Deadline

Y.E.S. training for new teachers is coming up fast, June 14 and 15, so please contact Sara Hodon, Director of Workforce Development for the Schuylkill Workforce Partnership, at 570-622-0940, by email at shodon@schuylkillworkforce.com or online at www.schuylkillworkforce.com for more information.

The Y.E.S. (Your Employability Skills) Certificate Program is a 1–credit, 120–hour, yearlong elective course targeted at high school seniors. The program is designed to bridge the worlds of education and work by developing and enhancing students' basic job skills that managers in all businesses and industries require. Students must meet the program criteria in order to receive the certificate of completion at the end of the year.

The course curriculum consists of 34 modules that are meant to give students the "real life" knowledge they can apply both on and off the job. Some of the topics covered include Effective Meeting Skills, Verbal and Nonverbal Communication, Team Building Skills, Financial Planning, Stress Management, Violence in the Workplace, and Resume Writing and Interviewing Skills, with Entrepreneurship being added this year.

The program originally began in York County in 1996 and has been implemented in Erie and Schuylkill counties beginning with the 2006–07 school year. In Schuylkill County, Schuylkill Haven Area High School was the first district in the county to offer Y.E.S. Of the 14 students enrolled, six received the certificate at the end of the year. In 2007–08, four additional Schuylkill County districts will be offering the program, with approximately 120 students enrolled.

First Ever Statewide Logistics & Transportation Industry Partnerships Meeting Held

It was the first of its kind – a gathering of all of the Logistics & Transportation Industry Partnerships from across the state for a one day conference in State College. The goals were to present information on issues facing the industry presented by expert resources in the field; and to give each Partnership an opportunity to present a "best practice." The day was jammed with 15 presentations and the general consensus was – "This is the best meeting I've ever been to!"
